DND_KEY_LOCK

This project, like most of my projects, overlaps a dozen other projects that I
am working on.
There is mention of this project at VANCOUVER THIEVES ! ,
and there will be more mention of this topic in other pages, someday, when I
re-gain full access to the internet !

FIRST, and foremost, the name " DND KEY LOCK SYSTEM " is, like much
of what I "NAME", a joke, since I did not name it, - people across Canada
upon seeing my typical KEYs that I make by hand, have, over the last 10 or
15 years, TOLD ME, that the key is a " DND KEY" ... !
Yup, they say stuff like "Oh, I recognize that, it is a DND key - I've seen those
before." People in Edmonton, Ottawa, Vancouver, etc. all seem to recognize MY
hand made keys as being DND.... Here in Canada, DND automatically stands
for Department of National Defence. ! ? ! Whatever. I developed the key for my
sister, here in OTTAWA, (capital city of CANADA ), Ontario (Province ), around
1985, in response to someone entering her rented house on a frequent basis.
Things were missing, food was missing, items re-arranged, etc. constantly. OK.
I added a deadbolt, and put in a spare key for the LANDLORD, marked,
"EMERGENCY ACCESS" pursuant to the Landlord-Tennancy ACT of
Ontario, that states that the landlord must have
a key for EMERGENCY ACCESS to the unit. Fine.
You can immediately SEE "MY" can handicraft, by just looking at the key :

There is something obviously different about this key, and what exactly "DND"
is doing to keys to make them look similar to this, I have no idea, and I have
never, in half a century of locksmithing, ever seen any key even remotely like
my invention... Whatever...
There is obviously a LOT of stuff happening with the key above, and this is
not the full story. Just recently, my room where I keep the devices that I am
working on, was broken into, and the newest key that I made was stolen...
( I am getting used to this! )
Back to the original key that I made for my sister circa 1985. About a week
after I added a new deadbolt, and gave the LANDLORD a new "EMERGENCY"
access key, my sister arrived home to find the landlord on the front step, with
the key that I made, and put in a sealed envelope, labelled
"EMERGENCY ACCESS", FIRMLY in the lock.... What he did not know
was that the key can only go IN the lock, and cannot be removed...
The LANDLORD TENNENT ACT states that other than in EMERGENCY,
24 hours notice must be given to the tennent for routine access. Asking the
landlord what the EMERGENCY was, he stated "I had to check the
roof shingles"... (duh)... Anyhow, we found out who was illegally enterning
the house.

Since then, I have modified, changed, added, tweeked and tried various variations,
to the lock system, and have a general idea where I am headed. There is, as I
state elsewhere, NEVER and "end" to any invention, and this is an on-going
investigation, which changes constantly. I do not have an electronic fabrication
shop, and metal-work shop, a plastic prototyping shop, etc. etc. , so that all
renderings to date are "BETA- prototypes", -- meaning that if anyone were to
copy these (duh) they would be copying partly-made, partly-finished, partly
assembled, partly-developed, versions, all that have glaring flaws, that I can
point out, since I am the one that made them in the first place!

So here we go with the illegally stolen versions that are being made in CHINA!

Since my locks and keys were stolen in VANCOUVER, there have now appeared
clones from a dozen web sites in CHINA, all with flaws, and hideous designs, that
copy the "LOOKS" of my locks, without including any security features, or
removing obvious flaws!

The BAR handle version (above) is typical, and it has so many flaws and brain-dead
construction points that I will not even bother to list them all here...

A really bad, obvious copy of my lock, simplified with every bad idea you could
possibly use, is below, and appeared on the CHINESE web sites like alibaba.com
within a year of the original being stolen!

An even WORSE, ( hard to imagine such a thing possible, but the CHINESE
can manage the impossible when it comes to manufacturing! ) copy, is
the door handle below:

The lock above, incorporates so many flaws, partial assemblies, cheapened modifications
and just plain bad ideas, that I would recommend people to put in a standard, cheap,
cheap door handle instead, and save themselves the added cost of the electronics, which,
in this case, are WORSE than nothing at all !

Since I started adding electronics to my locks, and the CHINESE followed suit with
dozens of CLONE models, all with remote controls, even the "North-AMERICAN"
"standard" locks like Weiser and SCHLAGE have added remotes to their locks, noting
that Weiser and Schlage are made in China in the first place, so that all anyone in
in China would have to do is look across the street to see the factories churning out
"New and Improved" electronic remote locks....!

The KEY to my lock is, indeed the key, and NONE of the hastily thrown together
clones even bother with the key itself, since this would require some sort of
engineering "analysis" and cleverness. There are, as well a dozen other little tweeks
which would go completely un-noticed by anyone who knew nothing about SECURITY.
Thus the clones, while having shiny chrome and brass finishes, in a really really nice
display package, with really really nice manuals, listing all the "features", are devoid of
the primary ENGINEERING considerations needed. In fact, the specifications and
user manuals BRAG about 'features' that are clearly FLAWS to anyone who
understands the point of the design in the first place. So the marvelous machining,
the excellent electronic fabrication facility, the fast and volumous plastic protyping
and mold fabrication facility, the excellent display packaging and manufacturing,
all seem to be totally isolated, with no "BRAIN" overlooking the entire project,
to properly design the product with any SECURITY objectives, from the onset.

The typical 'DND' lock that I have used over the last 10 years or so, looks as follows:

The prototype lock above, uses a standard, off the shelf type of key and lockset
such as schlage, weiser, defiant, kwikset, etc., all of which are cheap, easy to find,
and are for the most part, inter-replaceable, so that the lock bolt can remain in
place, while changing the cyclinder and key to another type... It should be obvious
that all plastic fabrication, and machining is done by hand using typical "home" tools.
If I had access to the magnificent machinery and fabrication shops in China, I would
be dangerous...

In all cases, the KEY iteself is the weakest link, since you can go online to youtube
and see a 10 year old kid show you how to make and use a BUMP KEY that, for one
BUMP key, say a Weiser, will open every single lock that the key fits into, or for
a SCHLAGE, will open every single schlage that the key fits into - not too great
security.

This is why I highly modify all the keys - again, the keys are cheap and available
everywhere (that I use) and only the modifications save them from being totally
useless. However, where I live at the moment, exist thieves who are masterful at
picking locks, so a second level of security on the keys would be necessary to
prevent access. NONE of the cheap clone locks from CHINA have any Primary
or Secondary KEY security, so that any kid with a BUMP KEY can walk in,
thus totally ignoring the electronics! People are paying easily a hundred dollars U.S.
-extra- for fancy electronic Security locks, -- that have old style wretched keys!
(duh)
Even worse, the electronics are defective from the start, so that thieves are handed
a dozen ways to play with the electronics.
On youtube are videos of thieves using a small handheld 'box' to open new car
doors, and such "emergency" devices are available for sale - ostensibly to open
your car if you loose your keys. (duh) More sophisticated devices are available to
high-end professionals and crooks!

In the past 6 years, there has been an explosion of "electronic" locks, particularly
cheap ones with key fob remotes. One product, the REMOTIZER, just fits over
your existing lock.

Every manufacturer has recently developed locks with remotes.

So that now, you can just go out, and replace your typical lock with an electronic
version, :

BUT, note that the keys are BUMPable, and pick-easy, copyable, and the remotes
have severe problems... Just think... if thieves can open the doors on your new car
( that has a key that costs you $200.00 U.S. to replace ), in 3 seconds, how long
do you think your electronic lock will take to hack?
I 'search' Chinese web supplier sites all the time for locks and parts, and as part of
the advertising, they send ME items such as electric lock-picking tools, on a regular
basis. You can go online and order both mechanical lock and electronic lock picking
tools anytime. Money talks. Mastercard and Visa accepted.

Anyhow, my "DND" ( Dumb n' Dumber ? Dork n' Doofuss? Down 'n Dirty ? )
lock which is very cheap to find, alter, - with standard key blanks, seems to have
spawned dozens of 'down-and-dirty' clones, that all have serious flaws, while
giving the appearance of 'new-and-improved' electronic security. ( NOT ).

As well, in the past very few years are Internet, Cell phone Bluetooth, and various
sorts of other locks that are appearing, and these are, indeed "New and Improved"
to various degrees, with both the "advances" and the " RISKS" of high technology.
Most of these use a Cell Phone's built in BLUETOOTH WIRELESS, or, use
the Cell phone or a Computer to access the INTERNET, which goes to a WI-FI
transmitter in the house, that talks to the lock. Some of these locks require you
to pay, typically $10.00 a month to a SERVER to access the locks. Whoopee.
Here is now fodder for Wi-Fi hackers, Blue-Tooth hackers, and Internet Hackers,
who will have 3 more ways to quickly and easily walk into your house, - on top of
defeating the KEY ( Bump Key, Picks etc.) and defeating the tiny remote controls
everyone is carrying around... Oh joy.

The LOCKITRON just fits over your existing lock - with its existing BUMP KEY
slot ! . . .

There always have existed "better" locks that employ remotes or swipe cards, or
better pick-resistant keys, and electronics :

Note that the lock above, at least goes to the bother of using an unusual key with
3 rows of pins. This is beyond the average 10 year old's Bump Key!
However, there is the "new-and-improved" electronic remote . . . . . . .

SO. . .

We have all these Electronic locks with all sorts of new problems that never existed
until recently. One common problem I read in the hundreds of reviews on each
product, is the batteries in the device going DEAD, thus removing all electronic
features. On the locks that I personally like, with NO KEY WHATSOEVER,
this is a serious problem. (Note that some locks have a place to connect a 9 volt
battery on the outside lock.) On most of the "Electronic" locks, they state "Just use
your KEY" - that would be typically the key that any 10 year old can open with
a BUMP KEY... ( duh). There are many, many other problems with the electronic
remotes that I have NOT mentioned, other than to say that hackers can duplicate
the electronic signals, sometimes quite easily. Or to say that you can go online to
DEFCON, the hackers group, (for just one example) and learn how to hack
electronic signals, and buy and build the equipment to do so...

THUS, we have a device with batteries ( that go dead )
a device with 'wireless' remote signals that broadcast to the surroundings,
a device (usually) with a pick-able, bump-able key,
that is somehow "MORE SECURE" , even with a dozen new and
improved methods to hack, defeat, and modify...

Another set of locks use FINGERPRINT identification, either solely, or
in conjunction with swipe cards, remotes, keys, keypads, internet, Wi-Fi,
and BlueTooth... And so it goes.

Looking on the internet, we find reports about fingerprint scanning locks...

There's an old adage in the security community that any lock can be picked.
Well in this modern age of digital doorlocks with fingerprint scanners, you
can't exactly pick them with a bump key, nail file or other such assorted
tools, now can you? Luckliy for budding criminals, the smart cats on
"Mythbusters" discovered that one of these "never been broken" digital
fingerprint scanner locks (they didn't cite the manufacturer) -- which also
comes with thermal sensors (to detect if there's a real human behind that
print) -- can in fact be quite easily duped. So how'd they do it? By copying
the master fingerprint onto a piece of latex and attaching it to his thumb,
Adam Savage was able to open the lock without a problem. Savage and
his team then duplicated the feat by making another copy with ballistics gel.
And to top it all off, they did it a third time (check the video link below)
with a just a photocopy of the master fingerprint and a little saliva. Perhaps
our own Marc Weber Tobias should have a word with the makers of these
schlocky locks.
USER COMMENT:
I have defeated fingerprint scanner with thermal sensors, simply by blowing
hot breath on the scanner. The breath gave it the heat, and the oils from the
person who used it last, were set-off by the moisture. Worked like a charm.

It wouldn’t be DefCon without a noted lock hacking team demonstrating
the gross insecurity of some of the latest security locks, such as a biometric
lock that could be easily cracked with a paper clip.

This year the three-member team of lock hackers, Marc Weber Tobias,
Toby Bluzmanis and Matt Fiddler who have been cracking locks at DefCon
for several years, also defeated an electro-mechanical lock, two deadbolts,
and an electronic safe. The researchers gave Wired.com a sneak peek at
their cracks and provided videos, which you can see below.
The lock that would seem to have thwarted them the most was actually one
of the easiest to crack. The Biolock Model 333 is a sleek £126 ($200)
lock that combines a mechanical cylinder and fingerprint reader.
The Biolock fingerprint reader illuminates a blue LED when a fingerprint is
authenticated. If the reader fails, a key can be inserted in a key port hidden
behind a flip door in the handle.
“It’s a very neatly designed container,” says Tobias. “But the problem with
this lock design is so elementary, frankly it defies belief.”
The lock can be programmed with one or more “master” fingerprints,
which can be used to authorise other users. To open the lock, a user
touches the fingerprint pad, and a blue LED light illuminates to indicate
the person is authorised, allowing the door handle to turn. The lock can
also be unlocked with a remote-control.
If the fingerprint reader fails, a mechanical key can be used instead.
The key entry is concealed beneath a flip door on the lever handle.
And therein lies the security problem, Tobias says.
A paperclip inserted in the Biolock's key chamber (hidden behind a flip
door) is used to push an internal pin and unlock the door, making the
fingerprint reader superfluous.
The mechanical lock, which uses a bypass cylinder, can be easily
thwarted with a paperclip inserted in the keyway to depress a pin that
engages the latch. In two seconds, the researchers were able to open
the lock.
“This is an absolute perfect example of insecurity engineering,” Tobias says.
Biolock did not respond to a request for comment.

The researchers also tackled a smartkey deadbolt from Kwikset,
which makes some of the most widely used locks in the US The
smartkey technology allows someone to easily programme the lock
with a reset tool to accept specific keys, making it popular with
apartment building owners who can re-programme the lock when
a tenant moves out.
The lock’s packaging touts it as certified at grade-one security level
-- the highest for residential locks. The researchers, however, were
able to crack the lock with only a key blank cut to a specific depth
and a screw driver.
They put the blank into the lock, inserted a screw driver to push the
blank into the chamber, then used a small vice grip to turn the screw
driver and open the lock.
They would need to remove the blank using a wire to make the lock
operational for other keys. Major Manufacturers also makes a £57
($90) locksmith tool that consists of a T-rod with a blank attached
to the end to replace the screwdriver and blank.
“The entire security of this system rests on tiny little sliders that are
being warped in this process,” says Tobias, noting that the crack
doesn’t take any expertise to conduct. Ironically, Kwikset’s packaging
for the lock includes a statement that says, “All you need is a screw
driver.” The slogan refers to installing the lock, but “either way,”
says Tobias, “it is essentially a very true statement.”
Kwikset spokesman Brent Flaharty said in an email statement
that the company couldn’t respond to the researcher’s claims
without seeing a video of the hack. He added that Kwikset’s locks
have “passed the most stringent lock-picking standard.”
But Tobias says that the standards are part of the problem, since
they don’t test for many real-world lock-cracking techniques.
“You read the packaging and yes they are certified as grade-one.
But they ought to be putting on the package that there are tools
and techniques that can open these locks in 30 seconds or less,”
he says. “Obviously they won’t do that, because no one will buy
their locks.”

I have invented hundreds of things over the years.
Many of them have been, years after
I made my "own", manufactured by large corporations- most of my
ideas are just common sense designs that produce something useful
from existing parts and bits and pieces. The first item, for example,
a Power Bar, that you can actually use, is typical of what I invent.

I consider my ideas "Evolutionary" - the technology just evolves to allow
better and more useable devices that everyone can take advantage of.

Some of my inventions, particularly the more complicated ones, have just been
outright stolen by individuals who bump into them. I have attended many
"inventer's" meetings and clubs etc. and even approached professional marketers,
etc., and many inventers only have ONE idea. I fully understand why they are
almost paranoid about protecting their ideas - if that ONE idea were stolen, they
loose everything... In my case, I have been inventing for half a century, and I
continually invent - I invented something yesterday! In fact , the device I thought of
yesterday ( January 22nd, 2012 ) is the most ingenious, marketable, money making
device I have every thought of ... ! Most of the things I invent, I would RATHER
simply buy in a store somewhere - it can take dozens of hours, hundreds of hours,
months, and even years to make something, slowly, BY HAND, using whatever
materials and scraps I can find - really, so that something that would be made thousands
a minute, in CHINA, simply are not worth the effort in CANADA... I make these
for me, since I am interested, and I " WANT" them for my personal use...

All the devices listed here are free for anyone interested. I have given up even
thinking about making anything in Canada... ( you must be kidding )....

     one of my first ROBOT models, used to interface

    type of computer that was thrown out by
    the millions. GOOGLE was very simply designed
    with few parts, and few wired connections,
    to test the INTERFACE to the typical 80186
    computer I was using. Since thieves here
    in Ottawa stole my 2 Desktop computers,
    adding information on this robot, will be
    slow and sporadic! Stay tuned ! There will

    and GOOGLE_TRANSLATE, as well as the
    robot GOOGLE itself.
    TYPICAL_IBM_TYPE_80186_COMPUTER
    This motherboard uses the INTEL 80186
    which hundreds of HIGH-END manufacturers
    produced. These were more expensive
    and powerful than the typical home computer.
    Kids and inexperienced Computer people
    will tell you that there is no such thing as
     an IBM type 80-186 computer ! ( weren't
    there, didn't see it, didn't do it ! lol )
     I still HAVE this motherboard. Luckily, it
    was not in storage where over a hundred
    old computers were stolen by thieves. . .

1/ If I spend days, weeks, months, years, making something,
I cannot manufacture it - I only have one... (duh)

Because illegal hackers have decided to spam the name
" robin dusty graves" or " robindustygraves "
I have decided to use the same tactics that they use, and load
my REAL web pages with the key search words that would be used
by search engines such as Bing, Yahoo, Google, etc.

As it now stands, searches are re-directed illegally and maliciously by
spammers, who create thousands of fake web pages, that Microsoft's;
BING.com, for example, found and displayed for many months after
the last set of 'new and improved' registrations of new illegal, malicious
spam web sites, each with " robindustygraves.html " included,
- while at the same time, BING, in a search, refused to find
DUSTYGRAVES.COM or ROBINDUSTYGRAVES.COM when searching for
'robindustygraves' ! ! ! Go figure.
( This demonstrates that the spammer/hackers clearly understand the
algorithms used by Google, Yahoo, Bing, Yandex, etc., and tailor the
fake web pages to achieve high placements on the search engines.
Google and Bing have changed their algorithms, while Yandex always
used a different algorithm, and seemed to achieve higher valid results
on the first search pages. However, the hacker/spammers are always
very close behind in developing better spam . . . )
The fake web pages re-direct to pornography, PAY-PER-CLICK websites,
that the spammers get paid a fraction of a penny for each person who
accidentally clicks on them, pages selling illegal prescription drugs
without prescriptions needed, and to pages where the SERVER is deliberately
set up to spam with POP UPS that state things like " MICROSOFT
WINDOWS ANTI-VIRUS HAS DETECTED A VIRUS - CLICK HERE
to continue Scanning, and Remove the VIRUS" - If you click on ANYTHING,
--the little "X" in the top corner to close, the box on the bottom that
states "CLOSE", -- any action besides CTRL-ALT-DELETE ( to bring up
the Windows Task Manager, to CLOSE your Browser entirely! ) it will
download a virus that generates a continual barrage of fake VIRUS
warning alerts, that demand Visa and Mastercard to remove- If you are
foolish enough to actually GIVE your Visa or Mastercard, the information
is used to make illegal purchases, AND the virus is NOT removed!
Many fake web re-directions take you to a page that appears to
"LOAD" for a long time with an hour glass or "now loading" ICON, but,
while that is happening, your IP address, your specific geo-loacation,
your specific information on YOUR computer, etc. is being gathered,
and by the time the fake web page actually loads, often with a FAKE web
"SEARCH PAGE" ( Pay-per-click), your computer is already compromised,
and is subject to further hacking from that point onwards... This SNOOPER
software was developed and is used by gaming companies like Electronic
ARTS, to completely analyse a "Customer's" computer when they log into
an online game. It looks at every possible scrap of information on the
computer, such as the video card used, the mouse, the CPU chip serial
number, and all software, etc. If the "customer" changes a mouse or any
part, the software can BAN the player, claiming that the game is being
illegally copied on "some other" computer... Now, of course, the
technology is used by hacker/spammers to snoop all computers that
accidentally are diverted to illegal, malicious, fake, web pages. The
computer is then put on a LIST of computers marked for further hacking.
The software also looks for all OPEN or UNLOCKED communication
channels ( ports ) that can be attacked... great stuff.
